It’s no secret that gardening is a wonderful way to spend weekend and after-work hours in Southern California. Clearing away what was leftover from last year or blew in during the winter, getting your hands in the dirt, setting up your irrigation system: there's so much to do all of a sudden!

Don't Worry...

Kern-Turf Supply is here with five gardening secrets you might want to consider while you’re at work in between the rows this year.

Install Irrigation.

Unlike hand-watering systems, good irrigation systems put water where you need it, when you need it, making overwatering a thing of the past and enabling you to take control over your gardening. Outfitting your property with the appropriate irrigation system is typically a matter of spacing, pressure and maintenance. Assistance from folks who have been around an irrigation system or two in their time can be found at our Alken Street or Wible Road locations, or you may choose to contact us right here!

Look For Bare Spots.

Do you see some areas needing a little attention here and there? It could be that a plant blew away and left a hole in your lovely front garden box, or perhaps one died. Take stock of your entire landscaping area and what you will need to re-plant, or otherwise fortify any existing hole or gaps. It might be that that particular area stays shaded most of the day while the rest of the area is in sun, or variegated shade. You don’t necessarily have to rethink the whole wheel for one spot, but you might want to plant a shade-lover there so that you get some beautiful foliage while also maximizing that part of your landscape.

Start A Compost Pile.

There are so many ways to DIY a compost bin, as well as a wide variety of premade composting containers, that all you really need otherwise is some pre-made compost and food scraps to get things started and a means of turning your pile. Remember to hose down your compost pile intermittently; it shouldn’t be wet but it should be kept moist. An excellent primer on composting can be found here.

Don’t forget about any outdoor standing structures that are not a part of your home, including driveways, retaining walls, gravel paths, raised beds, gazebos and other areas for gathering and entertaining, etc.
