Grass vs. Turf: The Rematch

In one of our previous blog posts, the Bakersfield landscape supply experts at Kern Turf Supply moderated a battle royale for the ages: Grass vs. Turf. With no clear winner in this contest, a no-holds-barred rematch is in order. It’s old vs. new, and natural vs. artificial, and it’s a bare-knuckle brawl for a spot in your backyard—it’s Grass vs. Turf, in a fight the media have named “The Battle Between Earth and Turf.” Someone is hitting the ground at the end of this matchup, and someone is going to be the ground.

This time around, we’re going to see how grass and turf handle a number of real-life situations. Will there be a clear winner? We just might found out.

An epic rainstorm floods your yard.

Grass: Soggy. The grass will be okay, but don’t step on it until things dry off a bit. This is a very tender, sensitive time for the grass; tread carefully. A puddle has formed in the corner of the yard. Grass loves water, but maybe this is too much of a good thing.

Turf: Everything’s good. A little wet, but good.

23 people show up in your yard.

Grass: Ouch. The grass grasps for air as it’s trampled by partygoers. When will this pain end? And who spilled beer on me?

Turf: Whatever. The turf is doing great! 23 casual party guests are nothing compared to 22 football players with cleats. But really, that’s not a huge deal, either. This is a day in the life of turf.

Your lawnmower is broken.

Grass: Confused, but hopeful. The grass wonders how and why it has become so long; it’s never been this long before. Soon, the grass expects to welcome snakes, coyotes, feral children, and many different types of wild ground birds like pheasants and grouse into its ecosystem. So this is what being wild feels like.

Turf: Lawnmower? What is “lawnmower?”

Extreme drought has ravaged the area.

Grass: Struggling. Eleven straight days without water has led the grass to believe its life might be coming to a dry, bitter end. Anyone have any water?

Turf: Fine. The turf is just fine.

And the winner is…

Turf. Definitely turf. With incredible composure, stamina, and grit, turf was able to handle any punches thrown its way. When things got tough for turf, it only became stronger. In fact, it seems completely unfazed by the competition or any outside factors.

The grass, already psychologically hindered by an emerging bald spot near the BBQ, couldn’t stand up to the constant beating it received from the party guests and the elements. When things got tough, the grass couldn’t muster a blade of toughness; it was mowed down by the competition, even with the lawnmower out of the picture.
Grass is a legend in the ground covering world, but analysts speculate grass might be past its prime. This grass has a lot to lawn before it can match up with the toughness and reliability of synthetic turf.
