California Now Requiring Pressure-Regulating Spray Heads – What You Need To Know

California is now requiring pressure-regulating sprinkler heads for all new residential construction and remodels. Pressure-regulating spray heads are designed to regulate outdoor water flow in order to lower superfluous outdoor watering and flooding. After 2020, all sprinklers sold in California are required to be sold with the components used to restrict water flow. Keep scrolling to see what you need to know about these new regulations.

What are Pressure-Regulating Spray Heads?

Pressure-regulating spray heads (PRSH) are components that regulate the water pressure coming out of outdoor sprinkler systems. This is done by controlling the amount of water released from the sprinkler. PRSHs help to prevent overwatering conditions, helping to reduce water waste and accidental flooding. Pressure-regulating spray heads are also referred to as water-conserving sprinklers or flow regulators.

Why Do I Need Pressure Regulating Spray Heads?

The California Energy Commission has found that new homes in the state use about 40% more potable water than older homes due to the increased use of water-efficient sprinklers and fixtures. In order to address this issue, the California Energy Commission has enacted a number of energy efficiency standards for new residential construction, which now includes requirements for pressure-regulating spray heads.

What are the Requirements?

All new single-family homes and multi-family homes with three or more units must be equipped with PRSHs. Pressure-regulating spray heads may not discharge more than two and five tenth gallons per minute (gpm). The sprinklers outside each home must all match to form a complete system that adheres to the maximum flow rate of the PRSH.

When do I Need to Comply?

All new homes must comply with the requirements of the California Energy Commission starting January, 2020. However, if your home is being remodeled, you will need to install pressure-regulating spray heads as of January, 2021.
